# 1285  All Greater Rochester 2017

The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle announced their 2017 All-Greater Rochester Lacrosse team today. The list features the top sixteen players and a number of honorable mentions were led by Canandaigua senior Attackman, Devin Andrews who was named "Player of the Year". Andrews, who was also a US Lacrosse All-American, scored 72 goals and 47 assists this year. The SportsFive Offensive Player of the Year plans to study and play at Stony Brook next year.

Section V lacrosse lost a team during the season (UPrep) to low numbers and injuries so the Section ended the season with thirty-six team. The session ended with 955 Varsity boys playing.

The All Star list is out recognizing the Monroe County League players for the 2017 season. Senior attackman Brett Randall (Brighton), senior attackman Devin Andrews (Canandaigua) and junior goalie Chayse Ierlan (Victor) were named US Lacrosse All Americans from Monroe County.

# 1260  Victor Heading to States for Fourth Straight Year

Victor won their fourth consecutive (and sixth overall) Section Five Title tonight with a 13-4 win over Canandaigua.  The Blue Devils have reached the finals five straight times, with their loss four years ago against Canandaigua in overtime 11-10 (HERE).  Tonight, the Blue Devils scored the first five goals and continued to hold at minimum a four goal lead the remainder of the game.

The All Tournament Teams for 2017 were announced at each final. MVPs for A and C were Colby Barker (Pittsford) and James Blazey (Pal-Mac). In the Class B, the award went to Andrew Russell (Victor) and in the class D it went to Connor Finger (Penn Yan).

The head Coaches of Section Five meet last week to listen to the presentations of thirty players who had been nominated for All-American and All-Academic awards. The awards, sponsored by US Lacrosse, identify some of the best players from each area around the country. Each of the thirty-six coaches in the section has a vote on each of the awards.

Webster Thomas took their first lead with an overtime goal from Colin Horan in the second overtime period to defeat Penn Yan 9-8. The Mustangs led for major portions of the game and had a three goal lead with 10 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Thomas scored the final four goals of the match-up to force overtime and take the win.

John Galbraith scored the final goal of Pittsford`s comeback victory over Webster Thomas 9-8 in the first overtime period. The Titans scored the opening goal and never trailed; however, the game was tied 5 times throughout the contest.

Webster Thomas played a close one with Hamburg (Section VI). The Titans led 5-3 at the half and the teams traded goals in the second half. Brad Smith and Nick Mabe each had 2g-2a for Thomas. Fairport (11-3) travelled south to beat Corning (12-4) of Section IV with TJ Hendricks (1g-2a) and Jake Bucci (2g-1a) leading the Red Raider offense.

Hilton took their first lead of the game with 6:12 remaining in the fourth quarter and held off Brighton’s attempt at a comeback to defeat the Barons 13-11.  Brighton played three strong quarters before Hilton took over in the fourth.  The Cadets scored five unanswered goals spanning just over 4 minutes in the final quarter to secure the win.

# 954  Big Save by Kelly Gives Win to HF-L

NOTES: Bryce Kelly made his 100th save of the season with seconds left on the clock to secure the 9-8 win for HF-L over Brighton. The Cougar scored the last four goals of the contest and held Brighton scoreless for the final 16:48 in their win. Kelly had an impressive game between the pipes with twelve saves and finished at 60%. Offensively, the Cougars looked to midfielder Alex Mapstone (4g-2a), attackmen Ryan Kelly (2g-2a) and Tim Breau (2g-2a). All nine of the goals by the Cougars were assisted goals.

Penfield scored the opening goal and never trailed in their 15-4 win over Brighton. Jake Sproule scored the open goal less than one minute into play with an assist from Mitch Standera. The Patriots were strong throughout the game with nine different players making their offensive scorebook.

The early game was back and forth with the score tied at 2-2, 3-3, 4-4, 5-5 and 6-6 before the Barons scored five unanswered goals to secure the lead.

After a close half, Spencerport pulled away in the third and fourth quarters before Brighton forced overtime with the last five goals in regulation. The Rangers didn't give up and took the victory in sudden death with an unassisted goal from senior midfielder Alex Renz. Spencerport won 17-16.

Churchville-Chili continued their undefeated season with a 13-12 win over Brighton. The Saints took the lead late in the second although Brighton kept the game close, for the second half. Brighton held the lead twice (late first and early second quarter). Churchville-Chili scored the first three with goals from Corey Yunker, Ryan Mead and Jason Tebo. Tebo scored 4g in the game, including his 100th career goal. Brighton scored their first goal with 5:59 remaining when Brett Randall scored the first of his 5g-2a. The Saints added their fourth, with Jacob Buck scoring off a feed from Yunker.

# 439  2016 All-Section Five List Released

This is the sixth year for the Section Five All-Section Team. It is an effort by the Lacrosse Committee and the coaches of Section Five to identify some of the top players among the over 1,100 varsity players in the section this year. Nominations for the lists came from Head coaches, administrators and SportsFive personnel. This year 15 players were selected for the first team, 13 players for second team and this year, 12 players on the third team. Our six All Americans automatically make the first team. All players on this list must first be named to their first team All-League teams or be from Independent teams.

# 418  Brett Randall Commits to Richmond

Brighton rising senior Brett Randall, has committed, this summer, to Richmond University and will be joining Coach Chemotti and the Spiders in the fall of 2017. Richmond currently plays in the Southern Conference where they finished 11-5 in 2016 and lost in OT for the conference’s championship game.
